RISE, Cancerkin and the Pop-up Opera

As part of our Considerate Constructors commitment, the team working on one of our projects in Hampstead volunteered to support Cancerkin’s ‘Opera Night’. Cancerkin is one of the closet neighbours to the construction site and are they are extremely understanding about the works happening on their doorstep.

Cancerkin are a dedicated breast cancer charity to offer support, treatment news and information about complimentary therapies and outreach programmes. They are the only breast cancer specific lymphoedema clinic in the London. They organise regular events to help raise money for treatments that may not necessarily be available via the NHS.

Yesterday evening the Pop-up Opera performed Bellini’s I Capuleti e I Montecchi at the Royal Free Hospital. Pop-up Opera is an innovative touring opera company dedicated to making opera enjoyable and inviting, without losing the quality of musical performance. They offer a modern take on classical operas in unusual venues. This event was to celebrate the merger between Cancerkin and Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres. It raised £4600 from the 181 attendees. £4600 is equivalent to 255 one-to-one massage sessions, which provide much needed respite to women who have recently been diagnosed or are going through treatment.

The RISE site team volunteered to help out on the actual evening setting up the stage, serving drinks, showing people to their seats and organising a raffle.

This is one of the many ways in which we intend to contribute and support local the community and businesses over the next two years on site in Hampstead.

A few quotes from the evening

“Your colleagues were absolutely invaluable in turning their hands to every kind of job to ensure that the event ran smoothly and efficiently – and on time!”

“Without the help of your colleagues it would not have been such a trouble free and enjoyable occasion. I hope that they enjoyed it too – especially the opera!”

“Just wanted to say what a great event you organised last night! What an amazing team of supporters. How did you get a team from RISE to the opera!! It was terrific & the whole evening really enjoyable – hope you’re basking in your success!”
